DIY Color Blocked Candles

Make these color blocked candles for your home in less than 30 minutes!Man, oh man is fall! As if the mass amount of pumpkin pictures on Instagram didn’t let you know that already though, right? After this past weekend of grey skies, it was time to bring out the candles. But of course I had to add my own crafty flair to them! In less than a half out you can have fun color blocked candles for your home to get you through even the gloomiest of days. Here’s how:

Time: 20 minutes + dry time (for set)
Materials: tissue paper, decoupage, brush, glass votives

Make these color blocked candles for your home in less than 30 minutes!I tested this method with a few types of tissue paper. The Martha Stewart brand did not bleed at all (unlike the Celebrate It brand sold at Michael’s) so I highly recommend it.

Make these color blocked candles for your home in less than 30 minutes!Start by tearing your tissue paper into smaller stripes. You’ll want to have a mix of both larger and smaller pieces so that you have options when layering. Apply a thin layer of decoupage to the class and place your tissue paper on top. Smooth down with your finger and then cover with another layer of decoupage. Keep building until you are satisfied with the design.

Let dry and then you are ready to use!

DIY Winter Votives

Time: 15 minutes + dry time (for set of 5)
Materials: glass votives, sponge brush, Deco Art Chalky Finish paint, sealer

DIY Winter Votives If there’s one thing I miss about winter as an Midwest transplant living in the Pacific Northwest, it’s the snow! What can I say, I’d gladly take pretty white flakes over rain any day. So to bring a bit of that into our holiday decor this year, I decided to make these wintery votives. They only take 15 minutes to make AND you can enter to win the paint supplies you’ll need to make your own (see below)!

DIY Winter Votives I used the color ‘Everlasting’ to achieve a wintery snow effect. The ultra-matte finish helps to really give the votives a frosted look that you can’t really achieve with standard acrylic paint. I was able to find all of the materials at Michael’s (even the delicious smelling candles!).

DIY Winter Votives Lightly dab the paint around the base of your votive with a sponge brush. Be sure to dab and not paint so that you get a light, transparent texture.

DIY Winter Votives Set aside and let dry (doesn’t take long at all). To ensure your paint lasts, since it can easy be scratched off the glass, you’ll want to seal with either Americana Decor creme wax or varnish. Add your candles and enjoy all winter long!

Holiday Votives

Time: 1 hour
Materialsglass votives, gold foil kit, rosemary, wire, wire clippers, foam brush, soft bristle brush

DIY Holiday Votives | The Crafted Life

I just cannot wait for the holidays this year! I know it’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but there’s something comforting about slowly getting our apartment ready for the upcoming holidays. After rounding up some must-try votive diys, I decided to make some of my own!

DIY Holiday Votives | The Crafted Life

Start by applying your adhesive (comes with the kit) to your votive. Let dry for about 15 minutes.

Once the adhesive changes from a milky color to clear, you’re ready to apply your gold foil.

With a fine bristle brush, gently dust off the excess gold foil.

Apply sealer over foil and let dry.

While your votives are drying, shape wire into circle. Measure enough to make a mini wreath frame that you can slip over your candle. Secure the rosemary to the frame by twisting wire pieces until tight. Once finished and votives are dry, light a candle and enjoy!

This might just be my favorite project so far. It was so simple to do, and the results are just beautiful! How will you be decorating this year? Any plans to DIY votives of your own?
