DIY Layered Cactus Stamp

DIY Layered Cactus StampBy now I’m sure you’ve seen how to make your own stamp in a number of ways. I still remember it was one of the first craft projects I even did (you can see that project here). What I haven’t done, however, is make a stamp into multiple different parts. It’s totally fun and a great way to create custom patters or art for your home. Here’s how:

Time: 40 minutes
Materials: stamp carving kit, ink, paper

DIY Layered Cactus StampI recommend using a color wheel for ink so that you don’t have to spend a ton of money on individual pads. Plus it’ll give you the freedom to experiment with colors. Also make sure you stamp is rubber so that it’s easier to carve.

DIY Layered Cactus StampLightly sketch out your design to the rubber. You won’t really be able to erase, so take your time. Carve out all the spaces you don’t want to be show on paper, leaving you with your stamp design.

Ink up your multiple parts and layer/stamp on paper! You can do anything with these stamps, from diy greeting cards, to custom pillow cases and more. So many possibilities, don’t you think?!

10 DIY Stamp Projects

10 DIY Stamp ProjectsOne of the reasons I love stamps is because you can create something beautiful with something so minimal. There really is a lot you can do with just the repetition of lines and color! The good news is that you can make these 10 beautiful diy stamp projects with anything from from an eraser to a potato. Because, let’s be honest, store bought stamps can cost a fortune, especially if you need 2-3 for one project. You may even have the materials on hand right now, so go on, get stamping!

Apply paint to the base of your planter. You may have to wait for it to dry before making touch ups.

When you paint the lip of your planter, be sure to paint the inside as well since it will be visible after you pot your plant.

For my decoration, I reused the stamp from my geometric cement planter project. This step really takes a while, so brace yourself! Seal when finished (mod podge works!).

Potato Stamped Napkins

Time: 1-2 hours
Materials: potatoes, fabric paint, cloth napkins, knife, embroidery thread

I finally got around to making stamps with potatoes. I knew 2013 would be the year! Although it was really easy to achieve the design I wanted, I found it to be a bit messier than any other diy stamp project I’ve done in the past.

Cut your potato in half so you have a flat carving surface.

Cut potato into desired shape. I cut my edges completely away so my hand would fit nicely around the cross shape when stamping.

You can either dip your potato in paint or apply the paint with a paint brush. It’s best to test what method you prefer best before moving on to your napkins. *Note messy hands!

Stamp away! I found the longer I held my stamp on the fabric, the more the paint bled. You may have to go back in with your brush to do touch ups, it just depends on what look you’re trying to achieve. Set paint according to specific instructions (on back of paint bottle).

I stitched embroidery thread around the edges to add a pop of color.

Not into potato stamping? Try dip dyeing your napkins instead!
