If there’s one thing I know we could all use more of at work (aside from extra vacation days) it’s color! These DIY plaster paperweights are beyond easy to make and the perfect way to make the work on your desk look a bit brighter. Here’s how:
Time: 30 minutes + dry time
Materials: plaster, silicon mold, spray paint, plastic cup + spoon
If you’ve never worked with plaster before, don’t feel intimidated! All you’re really doing is mixing and pouring. I chose to make my paperweights diamond shaped, but really you can use any mold as long as it’s silicon.
In a plastic cup, mix plaster with water (two parts plaster with one part water). The box says to use a one to one ration, but I found that to be too watery. You will want the plaster to be thick, but not too thick that it doesn’t pour of the cup. You may have to experiment a bit before nailing the exact measurement. I recommend testing with one diamond until you get the plaster in the perfect workable state.
To reduce air bubbles, it helps to fill the mold half way and let sit for about 30 seconds before filling to the top. Let plaster harden in the mold for about 30 minutes. Pop out and let harden overnight.
Once completely hardened, spray paint with the color of your choice and you’re done!
