DIY Painted Recipe Box (with Free Recipe Card Download)

You don’t need to do a complete room makeover in order for a space to feel colorful. In fact, it’s often the smallest details that pull the space all together. To add a pop of joy to your kitchen counters, and to stay organized, learn how to make a painted recipe box!

What You’ll Need

• Wooden recipe box
• Paint brushes
• Acrylic paint in variety of colors
• Tapebefu
• Free printable recipe cards
• Wooden letters (optional)*
• 220 Grit sandpaper

*My original plan for this project was to spell out RECIPE in wooden letters on the front, but because I liked the clean look of the stripes without it, I went ahead and skipped that step.

Tips for Painting a Recipe Box

1. If you find the texture of your wooden box to be rough, you’ll want to gently sand with 220 grit sandpaper. The smoother the start, the better the finish.

2. Start by painting the inside of your box and letting it dry before painting base coat (white on mine) on the outside. Let the outside base coat dry overnight before adding any stripe details.

3. Tape of your stripes and paint again with your base coat. Let that dry for at least an hour and then add the colorful paint to make rainbow stripes.

4. Peel the tape when wet then let dry fully before sealing.

Because this box you’ll most likely store this box in the kitchen, and it will come in contact with food, don’t skip the sealant! This will make it easier to clean down the road.

And that’s how you make a painted recipe card box! You really can paint it however you like, just make sure you follow the steps of sanding, and let paint dry between layers. The possbilities are endless and I can’t wait to see what you make!
