There’s always something about January that makes me want to organize. Perhaps it’s all the optimistic resolutions motivation floating around, or the fact that it tends to be a slower/snowier month. Either way, I’m not mad about it!
I decided to tackle my bookshelf first because things were getting a bit out of hand. You know it’s bad when you have to clean to take a before photo. Do you ever just have that space in your home where things sort of just pile up without you realizing it? That was my bookshelf. There was no system so I was just leaving items where I could find room; however, with a few simple changes, it’s now finally a functional and organized space! Here’s what I did:
First I needed to devise a system to get similar items together for easy access. Instead of traditional labels, or using nothing at all, I wanted something a little fun! I made my own text image in Photoshop then used the Instax Share SP-2 printer to print them out.
This printer is the best because you can print any photo from your phone to an Instax. Yup, that means you can print multiple copies of a group photo and all those instagram favorites without having to have your camera with you at all times. Plus how cute is the stripe film?!
Once you print your labels/photos, glue a magnet on the back with E6000 glue and let dry. You could also just use a clip if you have wire baskets. Attach to your basket and you’re done!
Having a mix of open and closed storage containers works great for open shelving. The open wire baskets and glass jars not only look great but they also allow for easy access for some of my most used items, while the larger bins and boxes let me keep miscellaneous items together without having to see the clutter.
And that’s it! So far the new system is working out great. And with most of the shelves being full, it’s going to be hard to find room for items that don’t belong there, hopefully keeping clutter at a minimum. Fingers crossed!
