Time: 45 minutes + overnight dry
Materials: quick dry cement, water, plastic/paper mold, disposable mixing cup and utensil, pencils, acrylic paint, x-acto knife, sandpaper
It’s taken me way too long to jump on the cement planter train (have you seen these diy laced cement votives?!). After this project though, I’m glad that I did! Working with cement is much easier and cleaner than I expected. You can use any plastic or thick paper/cardboard container for your mold, it just depends what shape you want to make. I got mine here.
Pour your dry cement into a disposable container and mix with water, I used about 8.5 tbsp. Stir until it’s the consistency of thick peanut butter, then pour into your mold. To create a nesting place for my air plant, I wrapped a tea light candle in plastic (so I could remove it once the cement dried) and pushed into the mold.
Once the cement hardens, give it about 30 minutes or so, peel away the mold.
My planter was a bit rough around the edges, so I used sandpaper to smooth it out. Be gentle with this step because the planter still needs to dry overnight before it’s completely set.
Now decorate! I made triangle stamps with pencil erasers using my xacto knife while waiting for the cement to harden.
