Even though 2020 was truly a terrible year, it was also one of reflection and revelation that I’m thankful for. A lot of truths came to light as we grew into a new normal. Some for the best, others well.. not as much.
Truthfully, running a business on social media felt very trivial and part of the problem. And a year later, especially after the insurrection, it really still does. While I’m happy to have a platform to use to not only share color and joy, but also speak out about injustice, it made me question what it is I do and why. Nothing like a pandemic to bring on an existential crisis, right?
With that in mind, I’ve been thinking of ways to make my business work towards the greater good, and not just in moments of tragedy. I run this blog by myself, and although it would be great to hire an amazing diverse staff (hello future goals), it’s just unfortunately not in my current budget to bring anyone else on.
But one thing that I can do, right now in this moment, is build giving back into my shop’s business model. And that’s why for the year of 2021, The Crafted Life is so excited to support Black Girls Code with a $1 donation for every mouse pad sold throughout the entire year! That goes for your orders through my shop AND any wholesale orders!
If you’re not familiar with Black Girls Code, they’re a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology. Definitely be sure to check them out and if you’d prefer, you can make a donation to them directly.
I made a pledge to all of you last year, and I meant it. I know this a small start in comparison to the overall work that needs to be done, but I hope it’s one that will grow in the future. And I hope that it’s a step you’ll take with me!
