New Head Shots + Interview with Portraits to the People

photo by portraits to the peopleIf you can think all the way back to January when I shared my goals for the year, you might remember that one of them was to get in front of the camera more. It’s not necessarily something I feel comfortable with, but something I think is important as a blogger to do.

Up until now, I’ve taken my head shots myself with a tripod or with the help of my ever so patience boyfriend. Sometimes you have to work with what you have, right? I decided that it was time to upgrade now that I have pink hair. And what better time than with my trip back to SF so could work with Portraits to the People!

photo by portraits to the peopleI ended up doing a combination of in studio and outdoor shots so that I would have a variety of images to use. If you’ve never worked with a professional photographer before, let me tell you, it’s amazing! At least that’s the experience I had with Sarah. Continue reading…

How to Turn Your Instagram Photos Into Wall Art

Learn how to turn your Instagram photos into wall art! Only takes a half hour and cost less than $30.My love for Instagram runs deep, but one thing I really miss is having physical copies of my photos. After scrolling through the snaps from my recent California road trip, I decided enough was enough and just printed a few off. And what better way to display them than by turning them into wall art?! This project is amazingly easy (and possibly my favorite to date) and can be done for under thirty buck. $30! Here’s how you do it:

Time: 30 minutes
Materials: 4×4 photo prints, wood blocks, paint, decoupage, brushes
Cost: ~$25

Only takes a half hour and cost less than $30.I used Snapfish to print my photos. If you plan on hanging your blocks with nails, you will want to hammer in your hook before starting this project. I recommend that you use removable velcro hangers instead though. They won’t hurt your walls and your art will hang flat.

Don’t worry if you get paint on the flat sides since one side will face the wall and the photo will cover up the other. Once the paint is dry, apply a thin layer of decoupage to the block and then place your photo. When your photo is in the desired position, let it dry flat.

Hang on your wall in a grid, shape, or any way you like! Easy peasy, don’t you think?

DIY Colorful Photo Backdrops

Time: 10 minutes + dry time
Materials: poster board, mini roller, paint

Learn how to make colorful photo backdrops in only 10 minutes! As much as I love the clean and simple aesthetic of the white backdrop, it seems that the smallest smudge can make it unusable. Which let’s face it, happens more often than not when crafting. Instead of recycling your less than perfect stash, try painting them to give them a new and colorful life!

Learn how to make colorful photo backdrops in only 10 minutes! If you plan on painting multiple colors, I recommend lining your tray with aluminum foil so that you don’t have to get a new tray every time. You can use acrylic craft paint, I just chose to use the leftover paint I had from this planter project.

Learn how to make colorful photo backdrops in only 10 minutes!Roll on your paint and let dry. If you use a bristle brush, you’ll be able to see brushstrokes. If your poster board is really thin, the edges will curl up, so once the paint is dry, flip over and weigh the corners down with books. This should help controlling the curling a bit.

These are perfect to make if what you’re shooting is white or lightly colored (helps it really pop). But if you’re not into color for your photography, you can always give this DIY Wooden Backdrop a try!
