Time: 1-2 hours
Materials: potatoes, fabric paint, cloth napkins, knife, embroidery thread
I finally got around to making stamps with potatoes. I knew 2013 would be the year! Although it was really easy to achieve the design I wanted, I found it to be a bit messier than any other diy stamp project I’ve done in the past.
Cut your potato in half so you have a flat carving surface.
Cut potato into desired shape. I cut my edges completely away so my hand would fit nicely around the cross shape when stamping.
You can either dip your potato in paint or apply the paint with a paint brush. It’s best to test what method you prefer best before moving on to your napkins. *Note messy hands!
Stamp away! I found the longer I held my stamp on the fabric, the more the paint bled. You may have to go back in with your brush to do touch ups, it just depends on what look you’re trying to achieve. Set paint according to specific instructions (on back of paint bottle).
I stitched embroidery thread around the edges to add a pop of color.
Not into potato stamping? Try dip dyeing your napkins instead!
