DIY Ombre Cloche

Time: 10 Minutes
Materials: cloche, spray paint, drop cloth

DIY Ombre Cloche | The Crafted Life

Warning: I may just have a new crafty addiction.

After making this 10 minute vase a few weeks back, I’ve been searching my apartment (and every store in the bay area) for other fun glass items to paint. I loved the light, airy look I was able to achieve with spray paint, and knew that when I spotted this cloche at Michaels that I had found the perfect item for my second attempt. At this point, no glass surface is safe from an ombre makeover!

Head to a well ventilated area and rest your cloche on top of your drop cloth. The trick to getting the ombre effect is to paint the actual drop cloth and not the glass itself. The paint will splash up from the drop cloth and stick to the glass. The closer to the cloche you are (without touch) the better. Work in a circle until the entire base is painted.

Oh Rachel. This is perfection. Love the idea of using it as a photo display too.

    • Rachel Mae Smith

Thanks Marlene! It’s so funny because I took several photos of this project with different items underneath. The photo won hands down though!

  • thediynurse

    Brilliant. I adore it.

    • Rachel Mae Smith

      Thank you so much :)

  • MaDonna

THAT is soooo cute!! It’d be cute to put a little succulent pot in there, too.

    xx MaDonna

    • Rachel Mae Smith

Thank you! And I’ve testing it with a succulent and you’re 100% right :)

  • HelloLidy

Love this – may have to try it, but we’ll see if my spray painting technique is anywhere as good as yours!

    • Rachel Mae Smith

I bet you can master it in no time! It’s surprising how easy it actually is. You can always do a test run with some plastic cups first :)

  • Priyanjana Roy

wow! this is really a great trick !

  • Melissa

So simple yet it makes such a statement, love it! I have a tiny cloche that is sitting on a shelf and I’ve been wanting to try something different with it, this I’m totally doing. :)

    • Rachel Mae Smith

Thanks Melissa! I cannot WAIT to see what you do with that tiny cloche. Let me know how it turns out :)

  • nzKellz

You might now need to create some sort of ‘help group’ for this addiction–this is going to be dangerous! Btw– where do you get that spray paint? it’s gorgeous!

    • Rachel Mae Smith

Oh don’t I know it! I really need a sponsor to ensure I don’t paint everything in my house with this technique :)

And the paint is by Montana. I picked it up at a fine art store. You might be able to find it at Blick, Utrecht or Amazon!
